The invisible river in the sky
It’s the largest river on earth, it’s in the sky and it’s invisible. Through a process called transpiration, a large tree in the Amazon can release 1,000 liters of water into the atmosphere in a single day. Multiply that by the hundreds of billions of trees in the rainforest and you get 20 billion metric tons on water rising into the atmosphere to create an unseen waterway bigger than the Amazon river herself.
Hundreds of billions of trees in the jungle release as many as 20 billion metric tons of water into the atmosphere every day, more than even the Amazon River. The water comes back down as rain creating what is “essentially a massive, solar-powered sprinkler system, spritzing water across a continent”.
