Day 295

Day 295

Finland has a radical solution for homelessness

Their “housing first” program is simple—people who need a home are given a home—unconditionally. They are placed in quality, permanent housing, before any other issues (mental health, addiction, unemployment, etc.) are addressed. Once someone is given a home there are programs in place to support them in other areas.

They have found that when this basic need of having a home is met, people are naturally happier, healthier, more likely to find a job and less likely to pick up a drink.

There were 18,000 people experiencing homelessness in Finland when the country first launched its effort to tackle the issue back in 1987. At the end of 2022, the figure had dropped to 3,686 in the country of 5.5 million, though only 492 spent the night outside.

Finland has created a beautiful model that other countries can take inspiration from.
