Rainbow Grandpa
Veteran Huang Yung Fu, saved his village on the outskirts of Taichung in Taiwan through his art. When he received a letter ordering him to evacuate the only home he’d ever had because it was about to be demolished, he started painting. He began with a bird on his bedroom wall and kept going until the village was covered in a rainbow of colour and Huang’s whimsical creations.
Students at the local university petitioned the mayor to protect the paintings as valuable cultural property. Rainbow Grandpa, as he came to be known, was allowed to keep his home.
